Animation Adaptation

First camera move in Toon Boom using my new background. It's still currently line art as I'm still to decide colour scheme. I want to make it look more like the rocks and water are situated within a cave and I want to make it look like it could be a sacred place. My current ideas are either a white/cream colour or blues. What else I have to take into account is because it's a cave, the light source wouldn't be the same as out in the open. I'm thinking the possible light source could either come from behind, like the exit to the cave is behind the rocks or the light source could come from above. If the light source is above there is the symbolism of holiness which would fulfill my idea of the cave being consecrated.

I've gathered reference images for possible colour schemes.

Ice Caves- The colours truly give the caves a magical quality especially the idea of making the rocks look more like ice than the dull grey which we are used to seeing. The problem with ice is the amount of reflection required for the setting to work and when I include a camera move the reflections would have to move with it which could prove complicated.

Marble caves of Chile- When I came across these images I couldn't believe how beautiful rocks under the ground could be. It seems the Earth hides a lot of natural beauties from us.

And then there's the natural colours of the Earth, white being the usual colour to express heaven and purity. I like the idea of using clear water like the first of these four images, it would reinforce the meaning of purity. I also included images with a recognisable light source to see how light affects the rocks and the colours that are suggesting depth.

Experimental Test 3

My third test for the experimental project. For this one I opted to try paper/card cutouts. I've liked working with paper in the past for static images like decoupage but I've never seen whether something like this works as an animation. It was the best and my favourite of the three media because although I have to cut out individual shapes, the animation was better than I expected and the image is defined and sharp. Silhouette images, I feel for me, give a good impact and the lecturer's have been saying a form needs to have a good silhouette in order for a design to work.

Background styles

Out of the two I chose the first one is definitely not a good style for an animated background. The brush strokes are very rough and there aren't any defining outlines of shapes. It could be a good style for experimental animation where shapes morph into various forms.

Darfield Cornfield

I used the drawing tablet to create this interpretation. I tried to keep it very rough like the original.

My interpretation

The other artist I looked at did the opposite. He focused on detail and I especially liked the one below because the light direction is clear and brightening one spot in the image gives a good focal point.

Life Drawing

Quick poses

10 minute pose- I found I had idealised the human figure by making her figure thinner than she actually was.

30 minute pose- The perspective is near perfect and I'm pretty happy with this. Drawing people in perspective isn't my strong point so to be able to pull a pose like this off means I'm improving.

Experimental Test- Acrylic Paint

Test 2 for the experimental animation piece- Acrylic Paint.
I think because I've worked with a lot of paint in the past (coming from an arty education), I found this experiment got boring after a short time. I think I want to work with a medium I haven't really ventured into before, and seeing as I've used paint so many times, I'll give this one a miss.
It is a good medium for colour and although once the paint is applied it can't be undone, colours can be mixed to create new pictures but for me that's the only advantage.

Sea Project Animatic

Here is our group project animatic: First draft

There are two different styles in this animatic because we had two people doing the storyboard.

Foliage

The next drawing assignment was to sketch out foliage. I took photographic references as well.

Animation Adaptation Project

The animation adaptation project is centred around designing a background based on an image from a book, comic or game. The idea is to end up with fully re-designed background that a camera can move around in.

My main passion is gaming and although I've played many games I felt drawn to the world of Final Fantasy. Below are two images. The top one is my concept based on the image below that one. I did take sections out of the original background and replace objects with others.

Emotion switch

My next motion studies assignment was to animate a switch of two extremes of emotion. So for example one minute the character is happy, the next he is sad.

Experimental Animation- Test 1 Sand

On of my projects is to do an experimental piece synced to one of seven pieces of audio given to me. The idea is to get away from using the computer (except for listening to the music and exporting the animation onto the computer) and use materials such as sand/paint/household objects etc to create a one minute animation.
I had a go at using sand to animate today. It's mostly just playing around and seeing what I could create with the medium but I found it quite difficult to form shapes with it without the sand collapsing in on itself. It's an interesting medium but not the material I think I would want to work with.
